Tennessee State University Students Host Tiny Desk Concerts in Dorm

One of the most iconic and well-known platforms for artists to promote their new music has been leading the charge since 2008, however, university college students have taken inspiration and curated Tiny Desk concerts in their very own dorm room.

NPR's Tiny Desk has hosted a plethora of artists, such as Chappell Roan, Mac Miller, Taylor Swift, SWV, and Givēon. They've been home to numerous talents from a broad range of genres to perform their new music and old hits live. The charm and authenticity the platform holds brings a sense of nostalgia and comfort to these massive artists and is a way for these musicians to connect to their fanbase on a more intimate level. NPR has continued their reign of mini-concerts since 2008 with Laura Gibson and has expanded ever since.

In its first year, only 10 artists made an appearance but in under 12 months did their popularity grow and almost triple in numbers. In addition to growing their audience & welcoming more musicians to their stage, they welcomed larger acts, such as Tom Jones in 2009, Weird Al Yankovic in 2010, Brandi Carlile in 2012, and T-Pain in 2014. Despite beginning within the rock genre, NPR's Tiny Desk has expanded into folk, HipHop, synth-pop, electronic, and more, opening their doors to a wide array of talent.

As their personal concerts are held, video graphed, and published online, its brought music global, across countless platforms. The idea behind Tiny Desk is ingenious as they've continued their authentic & minimalist feel for almost two decades, priming them as icons in the music space, and inspiring smaller talent to do the same.

Students at Tennessee State University are doing just that and bringing the Washington D.C. Tiny Desk to their very own dorm room. David Nyenwe's passion for music far surpasses the casual listening while walking to class as he's used his own space as his very own miniature concert space. In addition to performing covers of hit singles, including Chris Stapleton's "Tennessee Whiskey", SZA's "Snooze", and Coco Jones's "ICU".

Similar to NPR's, David includes a live band, comprised of fellow students to accompany and elevate his live performances.

In addition to posting covers from an array of artists, he's also used his platform to promote original music, self-written & produced. His efforts to make pursue music have been met with mass appraisal and attention as he continues to release new music for his growing following.
