NYC Summer Festival: Governors Ball

Randall's island hosts one of New York City's biggest live festivals where over 50 artists and fans alike come together for a weekend of music and features both independent and major artists.

Since its curation in 2011 where the live outdoor venue was held on a singular day, music lovers far & wide had traveled in to discover new music or see some of their favorite artists and thus begun the adoration for the festival. Its first appearance brought along the largest crowd onto the island than any other venue. The chill & relaxed scene was one you didn't want to miss as it was headlined by more independent and major league artists.

Following the success of the first festival, the venue expanded to a two day event and brought with it some bigger names in the music industry, which undoubtably drew in the crowd. The 2012 lineup featured Modest Mouse, Major Lazer, Cage The Elephant, and more. After a successful first appearance the year before, this summer solidified the yearly June festival in NYC.

Not only was the live concert coming back for years to come but the 1-2 day festival soon turned into 3 and more major artists got wind of its success & joined the lineup. From Kid Cudi, Tame Impala, Miley Cyrus, Flume, and focusing heavily on mixing indie and smaller artists.

As the years progressed, tickets continued to sell out, and artists were prioritizing their appearances at this major location. From rapper Eminem to rock band Vampire Weekend, and even Billie Eillish. The pandemic took away the infamous festival, which was to continue its legacy during the summer. Due to Covid-19, the cancellation was inevitable, however, we're still mourning the lineup of the century. Stevie Nicks, Miley Cyrus, Tame Impala, and Swae Lee were the highly anticipated artists to take the stage, however, it wasn't until the following year that we would be able to head towards Randall's Island again.

As we approach this weekend, which is famously Gov Ball weekend, we asked if this year's lineup the best one yet?

After the release of the 2023 Governors Ball Festival in March, fans were ecstatic to see their favorite performers this year. With appearances by Kim Petras, Central Cee, Diplo, Kendrick Lamar, and Lizzo to smaller artists like The Amazons, Haiku Hands, and Kaycyy. There's truly something for everybody. Reigning as New York's Favorite Party, the summertime not only gives us our favorite weather, good food, and company but the music & artist appearances at Gov Ball is always a summer staple.
