Artificial Intelligence and It's Impact On The Music Industry

It's no mystery that music is constantly changing, whether from its production, sound, inspiration, distribution, and listened to. Regardless, we're always trying to keep up. Artificial Intelligence is the newest addition to music and has the whole world in shock in its impact on the industry.

From curating phenomenal beats to even mimicking iconic artists, who knows how far this newer technology will go in altering the industry altogether. Multiple AI-created tracks were made public in the past few months and have become viral sensations. Whether it's faux covers from iconic artists or self-made addictive beats, fans worldwide are keen to see how far they can go.

Drake| Billboard

One viral instance that made headlines was an original beat with what sounds like rapper and HipHop artist, Drake. The song 'Heart On My Sleeve' became a worlwide sensation amongst listeners and although it was entirely fabricated, fans are wishing that Drake released it.

Some other examples are The Plain White T's 'Hey There Delilah' covered by Kanye West, SZA's 'Kill Bill' covered by Ariana Grande, and more. Not only are the voices uncanny in its similarity to the artist's voice but fans are encouraging more of these covers. Whether it's current artists like Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran, or Travis Scott, AI is even creating covers by the late Juice WRLD, Biggie Smalls, and Michael Jackson.

The ease in which AI can mimic an artist's tone and talent while manipulating it to the point where it's difficult to distinguish is scary to say the least. Industry leaders are already ahead of the game and are working with streaming platforms, such as Apple Music, Spotify, and Soundcloud to prevent their artist from having their voices misused.

So what does this mean for the future of music?

Artificial Intelligence has a lot to offer when it comes to the music industry, from predicting trends in music to quickly creating an ingenious track unlike any other, and even writing original lyrics. It begs the question, how far will AI go?

Despite the readily available and unique music at the click of a button, thousands of artists and music industry professionals are feeling robbed of their talents, hard work, and credit. Artists have even taken legal action to take down the released audios and claim copyright, however, this may be a difficult battle. Since some of the releases are originals, there was technically no violation, however, there may be some ground to stand on when it comes to AI using their voices without consent from the artist. Similarly, if a producer used AI in creating a new EP, it may be difficult for them to be compensated appropriately as there haven't been well constructed guidelines surrounding it.

As more of these tracks are released, the industry will have to shift and open its doors to the world of AI. Producers will be more accustomed to getting quick inspiration from these platforms in generating a new hit.

Multiple website have been designed for users to create their own music at their leisure & it's never been easier to write, produce, or even have your favorite artist sing your own track. Some examples of these sites include Amper Music, Soundraw, and AIVA. The sites, claiming that users are able to "compose custom music in seconds" (Cheng, 2021) where you can put your creative outlet and adoration for music into one space. This exciting and futuristic way to craft music is definitely something you'll want to explore as we uncover a whole new world.

Although AI brings with it a unique and different perspective to music, they can't replicate or even duplicate what artists, producers, songwriters, and more bring to the table. The pure creative and emotional nature that these individuals collaborate on could never be outlived.
